Many victims of auto accidents involving a recalled Toyota vehicle are frustrated by repeated news stories that crash trends revealed speed control problems with Toyota cars, trucks and SUVs years ago. Why wasn’t more action taken back then, so that the lives, property, and well-being of so many Americans could have been saved? That is the million dollar question.
According to a report in USA Today, analysis of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration over the last 10 years shows that since 2004 speed control problems have been more common for Toyota vehicles than for other large automakers.
Insurance data revealed Toyota problems back in 2007
Disturbing trends NHTSA data aren’t the only issue that has come to light recently. Also troubling is that a major auto insurance company, State Farm, alerted the NHTSA about an increase in Toyota acceleration issues as far back as 2007.
Illinois based State Farm, the nation’s largest auto insurer with about 18 percent of the country’s auto insurance business. With 42.4 million cars insured, the insurance giant has access a massive pool of car crash data that it can analyze.
According to a spokesperson, State Fam initially contacted NHTSA in late 2007, and then again an unspecified number of times over the years. There was a small recall of Toyota vehicles in 2007 for floor mat entrapment issues, but there are serious questions about that recall after internal Toyota documents revealed that the auto maker saved $100 million by negotiating with federal regulators for a smaller recall.
While Toyota is trying to discount the claims made by USA Today and State Farm, the trends are troubling – as is the lack of timely, effective action by our government. Toyota would do well to remember that it was State Farm that helped deduce problems with Firestone tires on Ford Explorers about a decade ago. The data, as they say, never lie.
Finally, Consumer Reports has gotten in on the action. A review of 2008 model Toyota vehicles shows that those vehicles accounted for under 20 percent of the U.S. market yet were responsible for 40 percent of acceleration complaints.
