Toyota Recall Attorney Asks: How much did Toyota know before the recalls?

The story of the Toyota recall madness dominating the news these days reads like a political crime novel. Backroom dealings, influence pedaling, targeted lobbying efforts, cover-ups and deception. Not only are there numerous questions about how much Toyota knew about the manufacturing and design defects in its vehicles, but it seems clear that our own federal watchdogs were asleep at the wheel. Saving money by skimping on safety?

The issue of unintended acceleration was raised years ago, and safety experts and lawmakers are now wondering how much Toyota knew about the problem and why more was not done. Shockingly, it seems that cost savings was a major reason that the unintended acceleration issue was continually swept under the rug in past years. Internal Toyota documents reveal the automaker bragging that they were able to limit the scope of an unintended acceleration recall in 2007, saving themselves $100 million by negotiating with federal regulators.

Putting money into lobbying, instead of safety?

It isn’t unusual for large corporations to lobby lawmakers, but what is disturbing is the amount of money that Toyota has spent on recent lobbying efforts, and the high-up places where they have influence.

In 2009, records from the U.S. Senate reveal that Toyota and their related entities spent a whopping $4.1 million on lobbying efforts. In the last ten years, they spent a total of $35.2 million to lobby lawmakers. In fact, just as the recalls started to unfold late last year, Toyota was busy spending $1.77 million to lobby Congress in October, November and December of 2009.

To protect their image during these difficult times, Toyota has hired a well-known Washington D.C. crisis management team. This team, pulled from a major Washington lobby group, is known for its connections and contacts inside the capitol. Their influence has touched about 40 percent of Congressional members working on the Toyota investigation. These folks have received campaign donations from the lobbying firm in question over the last ten years, which could influence the course of the investigation.

With so much money flooding into our elected lawmaker’s pockets during what should be a serious and thorough investigation, can Toyota customers expect to get to the bottom of the recall problems?
