What do you do when one federal agency with a $900 million annual budget does not have the expertise or manpower to investigate Toyota vehicle defects? Ask for help from another federal agency!
NASA Scientists to Investigate Toyota Throttles
Under pressure from lawmakers, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has asked nine scientists from NASA to examine the theory that faults in Toyota’s electronic throttles are to blame for incidents of unintended acceleration. LaHood has also tasked the partially federally funded National Academy of Sciences to study unintended acceleration across the auto industry, not just Toyota.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has come under fire for not doing enough to protect consumers from problems with Toyota floor mat accelerator pedal entrapment and sticky throttle issues. Not only that, but there are questions about whether or not the NHTSA is properly equipped to conduct a thorough investigation of Toyota’s possible electrical / mechanical throttle problems.
The nine National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) scientists tasked with studying the Toyota problem have expertise in complex problem solving as well as in-depth knowledge of electronics, software integrity, and electromagnetic interference. In addition to the NASA review, the NHTSA is also reviewing Toyota’s electronic throttles; their results are expected by the end of the summer. Results from NHTSA and NASA will help determine if further action will be taken against Toyota.
Roles of NHTSA and Toyota in Recall to be Scrutinized
Parallel with NASA’s efforts, the Transportation Department’s Inspector General will be reviewing how the NHTSA handled Toyota’s acceleration problems over the years. Toyota’s role in the recalls will also be examined, as there have been accusations and internal Toyota documents hinting at an unfairly cozy relationship between NHTSA officials and Toyota.
Unintended Acceleration Accidents: An Industry-Wide Problem?
While many claim that Toyota has seen more than their fair share of unintended acceleration accidents, many believe that the problem of vehicles speeding out of control is an industry-wide issue. Since the question was raised during congressional hearings about acceleration issues in vehicles from other manufacturers, the National Academy of Sciences will get a chance to weigh in.
While the National Academy of Sciences is largely government funded, it does make use of scientific experts across the country and it also ensures that its studies and recommendations are peer reviewed. It will take the Academy’s scientists eighteen months to complete their review of unintended acceleration / electronic throttle issues across the auto industry.
Let’s hope these investigations actually produce some meaningful results for Toyota recall accident victims and their families, and don’t just waste taxpayer money further covering up Toyota’s mistakes.
