Truck accidents are a major cause of traffic accident injuries and fatalities on Texas roads and highways. With miles upon miles of sparsely populated roadways punctuated by bustling urban city centers, driving a tractor trailer or other large vehicle through Texas can be hazardous. But it isn’t the road or the vehicles or the weather that causes the majority of truck accidents, it is drivers themselves. Studies by federal safety experts have shown that driver behavior is hands-down the greatest contributing factor in tractor-trailer accidents in the United States.
Driver behavior is more than ten times as likely to contribute to a tractor-trailer crash as other factors like weather, road conditions, or vehicle performance. This fact was revealed in a Large Truck Crash Causation Study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the agency whose primary mission is to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving large trucks and buses.
This study is unique because it looked at large truck accident data from across the country instead of focusing on specific crashes or individual crash causes. The goal of the study was to take all pre-crash factors into consideration and try to determine how they contribute to large truck accidents.
This unprecedented study revealed that in 88 percent of the crashes driver error was the reason for the accident. Experts will now go on to study driver behavior in more detail to determine what can be done to reduce the number of serious large truck accidents across the nation. Some factors that have to be taken into consideration are the use of drugs (prescription and over-the-counter), excessive speed, driving while tired, driver inattention, distracted driving, truck driver work environments, and lack of familiarity with the road.
About two years of crash data were considered in the study, which included 24 sites in 17 states. To be included in the study at least one large truck had to be involved in the accident and had to have caused at least one fatality or injury. There were a total of 1,127 large trucks in the study, along with 959 non-truck motor vehicles which were all together involved in 967 crashes. As a result there were 251 fatalities and 1,408 injuries.
