Many of the contract workers were in very close proximity to the fire when it erupted. These refinery workers took immediate actions to get away from the fire as quickly as possible, which they feared may cause an explosion at any minute. Many of the workers suffered various injuries in their frantic efforts to avoid a potential life-threatening situation.
Nine of the injured plant workers have hired Vujasinovic & Beckcom to represent them. Vuk Vujasinovic filed a lawsuit against Lyondell in Harris County, Texas. The lawsuit is currently pending.
LyondellBasell reported to the media that there were "no injuries" to any of the plant workers, however, the company never spoke to any of these nine workers who were not employed by Lyondell, but by a different contract company working at the refinery.
It has been reported that one or more of the responding fire fighters were injured during their efforts to put out the refinery fire.
Lyondell told the media it was investigating the cause of the fire eruption, however, the company has not disclosed any results of this internal investigation. Some concerns that will need to be answered include: why didn't an alarm ever sound? why didn't any water sprinklers ever activate? what type of evacuation plan did Lyondell have in place?
