Our goal is to level the playing field between consumers and insurance companies and expose the tricks, traps, and techniques they use to cheat injured people out of their legal rights. We also let consumers know about legal news, including verdicts and settlements and other interesting legal information.

Yes. Driving an 18 wheeler or other large commercial truck is not the same as driving a passenger car. Large commercial vehicles handle and operate differently. The operation of large trucks involves activities other than driving, such as securing loads, and loading and unloading activities. And following safety rules while driving an 18 wheeler is critical as when these large trucks are involved in crashes, the results are often catastrophic or deadly.
Driver qualification rules for truckers are contained in Part 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. These qualification rules discuss general requirements, items that will disqualify a trucker, driving record checks, prior employer references, road testing, drug and alcohol testing, physical and medical examination requirements, and maintenance of driver qualification files.
These qualification rules apply to both the truckers and the trucking companies that employ them.
There are many ways in which unqualified truck drivers cause accidents. For example, if a trucker is not familiar with the operation and handling of an 18 wheeler, he or she will not know how to drive safely and defensively, take proper evasive actions, or recognize roadway hazards. This increases the risk that this trucker will cause an accident. Another example: If a trucker does not know how to properly secure a load, the load may shift and cause the 18 wheeler to veer in an unintended direction, or roll over, or do any number of dangerous maneuvers. These are just a couple of examples -- there are many additional ways in which unqualified truckers cause accidents.
