Auto Accident Injuries from Head-On Collisions

A head-on collision – when another vehicle drives head-first into the front of your car – is a terrifying experience. The drivers of each vehicle can often see each other as their vehicles crash, and the resulting accident can be deadly. While head-on motor vehicle collisions account for only a small proportion of accidents on Texas roads, they account for over 10 percent of all auto accident fatalities.

The most common types of injuries in head-on collisions include soft tissue injuries, fractured or broken bones, and joint dislocations. Typically the knee, hip, and thigh are affected.

Head-on collision fatalities

Head-on collisions result in death and very serious injury mainly because the combined speed of the two vehicles magnifies the impact. For example, if two cars are traveling towards each other at only 35 mph, a head-on collision will have a force of 70 mph. As you might imagine, there is a big difference between striking an object at 35 mph and striking one at 70 mph.

Seatbelts and head-on collisions

If head-on collision accident victims were not wearing a seatbelt, they risk being partially or completely ejected from the vehicle during a crash. Ejection from a vehicle during an accident carries a 70 percent fatality rate, and if the victim survives he or she can sustain serious injury.

Knee, leg, and hip injuries

Victims of head-on collision accidents commonly suffer from injury to the feet, ankles, knees, femur, and hip. Injuries to these bones occur when they absorb the impact of the crash and bend or fracture. A driver’s feet and ankles can be twisted and caught under the pedals on the floor, causing the knee to twist and leading to ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) or MCL (medial collateral ligament) injury. The medial meniscus and lateral meniscus in the knee can also sustain damage.

The long leg bone in the thigh – the femur – connects to the hip and both the hip and the femur can be damaged in a head-on collision. The femur can be shattered or dislocated from the hip joint, both very painful and debilitating conditions. Injury to hip and thigh bones can also lead to internal bleeding. The shin bone, the tibia, can also be damaged.
