Don’t Make These Four Deadly Driving Mistakes

It is sad but true: most car and truck accidents in Texas are completely avoidable. Drivers who are not paying attention to the road or who make simple mistakes while behind the wheel are responsible for the vast majority of accidents on the road today.

Some of the deadly driving behaviors are not what you might think. Most people know that driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal but very dangerous, but how many know that swerving kills over 15 thousand people a year? The same goes for speeding. We have all heard the phrase “speed kills”, but so does distracted driving and red light running.

If you have been the victim of a serious motor vehicle crash, you know first-hand how some of these behaviors can result in devastating consequences. These are all behaviors that responsible drivers must avoid to keep themselves and others safe.

Four Deadly Driving Mistakes

  1. Running a red light. Impatient drivers cause a whole host of accidents, none more devastating than those that occur when a driver runs a red light. To make matters worse, drivers sometimes speed up to try and “beat the light”, and extra speed makes a car extra deadly. “T-bone” or head-on crashes, two especially dangerous types of collisions, often happen when a driver runs a red light. Busy city drivers are especially prone to red-light running, but impatient drivers should remember that saving a few seconds is not worth serious injury or death.
  2. Swerving. There are usually two reasons that drivers swerve out of their lane. First, drivers swerve to avoid an object in the roadway (or an animal like a deer). Second, drivers can become distracted and swerve out of their lane while not paying attention. The end result is the same. Any time a driver unexpectedly leaves his or her designated lane of travel a crash can occur. According to the NHTSA over 15 thousand deaths every year can be attributed to drives who swerve out of their lane.
  3. Overcorrecting. This can happen after a driver swerves out of their lane. In an attempt to return to their lane of travel a driver can jerk too hard on the wheel and make their situation worse. Overcorrecting is particularly dangerous when the weather is bad (ice, snow, and water can make road surfaces slick) and when driving vehicles with a high center of gravity like SUVs, trucks, and buses. About four percent of all traffic fatalities result from drivers who overcorrect their vehicle.
  4. Distracted driving. Distracted driving is becoming an increasing large problem in Texas and indeed across the US. Busy drivers try to do too many things while driving, when their attention should be focused on the road. Researchers and accident investigators have found that drivers text message, use cell phones, eat, apply makeup, fiddle with music players, read, and more while they should be paying attention to driving safely. Distracted driving is a nebulous term but the behavior it describes contributes to the majority of accidents on roads and highways in Texas.
