Texas Motorcycle Accidents are a Common Cause of Serious Brain Injury
If you are a motorcyclist in Texas, you know that you are much more likely to be injured in an accident than the driver of the car who hit you. Bike riders are likely to lose limbs and break bones—and are especially prone to traumatic head and brain injuries.
Even if a rider is wearing their helmet in a Houston motorcycle crash, they could still suffer a number of head injuries, including:
Closed head injury. This is a traumatic brain injury where the skull is not fractured but the brain tissue has been impacted, causing swelling. Surgical procedures are not always effective in treating a closed head injury. Closed head injuries can result in lifelong physical, emotional, or mental disability.
Subdural hematoma. This is a slow bleeding inside the brain, which can be hard to detect without an electronic imaging test.
Cerebral contusions. These “brain bruises” are due to the brain swelling because of pressure, bleeding, or trauma to the skull.
Concussion. Concussions are a milder form of head trauma, and can cause a victim to lose consciousness. If untreated, victims could fall into a coma.
Hematomas. Cranial bleeds can form blood clots, or hematomas, which are sometimes visible as a bump on the skull.
Skull fracture. While skull fractures may heal on their own, there is a danger of bone fragments burrowing into the brain tissue. If fragments do reach the brain, surgical removal and repair may be necessary.
Motorcycle accident injuries range from mild to severe; in some cases, they can prove fatal. The best way to detect a head injury is to undergo diagnostic testing as soon as possible, such as a CT scan, MRI, or physical exam. It is critical that you follow up with your doctor regularly over the next several weeks.
