5 Driving Myths That Cause Deadly Texas Car Accidents

It’s been a long time since your driver’s education class. If you were to take a multiple choice driver's test today, would you pass?

There seems to be a separation between the driving population's interpretation of driving law and the actual law itself. Driving laws are in place for a reason- they exist to keep us safe.

Listed here are a few common driving misconceptions that often cause Houston car crashes. Are the following statements True or False?

Nobody uses turn signals anymore.False. Drivers often think that signaling is for city driving and not highway driving. Unfortunately, many sideswipe accidents are caused by drivers who changed lanes on the highway without alerting drivers around them. This is especially important for other drivers who are in your blind spots.

Turning right on a red light is optional. True, unless there’s a sign that says otherwise. A car may be seen as “holding up traffic” by not turning on red, but the cars behind may not be able to see the pedestrian crossing the street or an obstruction in the road. Only turn right on red if the coast is clear.

Tailgating is okay in the fast lane. False. Even if you are frustrated at the speed of the person ahead of you, tailgating does nothing to speed them up—and is more likely to injure you and the other driver in an accident.

Pedestrians should only cross at crosswalks. True—but beware. Pedestrians often dart across streets wherever they can, sometimes weaving in between cars, so you should always be on the lookout for people on foot.

You should always stop at a yellow light. False. A yellow light is about a second long. Sometimes it is more dangerous to stop at the intersection instead of traveling through a yellow light. However, if you can stop safely (minding the car behind you), it is best to stop. If you find that you must speed up to “make a light,” you definitely should slow down and just wait for the next green.

Our Houston car accident attorneys have seen countless good drivers become victims at the hands of aggressive or irresponsible motorists. These accidents often cause the victim to miss work because of a painful injury or suffer long and costly recovery times in a hospital. That’s why we are committed to getting these victims the compensation they need to heal—and bringing those who hurt them to justice.
