Fire cases are difficult, and require a lawyer with experience in fire science. The attorneys at Vujasinovic & Beckcom have successfully handled many fire accident and burn injury cases.

When a person or family needs to bring a lawsuit due to some type of fire, the family has the burden of proof. This means the family must gather the evidence and prove its case. Fire cases are more difficult to prove than other cases because a fire usually destroys much of the relevant physical evidence. This is why it is very important that the family hire a lawyer who has experience in handling fire cases.

There are three things an experienced and qualified fire case lawyer will do in every single fire case:

1. Immediately send a team of fire investigation experts to the fire scene to conduct an in-depth investigation. It is crucial that this is done immediately, otherwise there is the risk that some of the evidence will be lost or compromised. The lawyer will also make sure the fire investigation experts identify, gather and preserve all of the physical evidence that will be required to prove the case. The lawyer will make sure the preserved evidence is properly secured and that all chain-of-custody rules have been followed. This kind of fire expert work is expensive, and only lawyers who can afford to front this kind of expense should be handling a fire case.

2. Retain respected expert witnesses who will help prove the case. Fire cases are difficult not just because many times the evidence is burned up -- they are also difficult because they involve the complex field of fire science. The attorney will hire experts in various different fields related to fire science in order to determine the origin, and cause, of the fire. "Origin" means the location where the fire started. This means a specific location in the structure that burned; for example, a certain area in the room of a home, or a certain area in the passenger compartment of a vehicle. "Cause" means what actually caused the fire to start. This could be anything from a defective household appliance to arson. The fire experts will use a process of elimination and other methods to determine what caused the fire. Again, this kind of expert work is expensive and requires an attorney who can afford it.

3. An attorney who specializes in fire cases will be familiar with the various codes and regulations that govern fire investigations and fire cases. One of the primary sources of these rules is the National Fire Protection Association. The lawyer will know these rules and regulations because they are an important part of any fire case: knowledge of these rules helps the lawyer assist his or her own experts, helps him or her cross examine the opposing fire experts, and helps in the overall prosecution of the fire case.
