Why do I need a CT scan for my back pain?

A: If you are suffering from back pain, your doctor may order diagnostic testing.  Why?  Your doctor may suspect the cause of your back pain, but will want to confirm their suspicions before moving forward with a specific treatment plan.  This is especially true if your doctor is considering surgery.

Your doctor may request that you undergo a computerized tomography scan, also known as a CT scan. A CT scan can be used to confirm a suspected diagnosis, pinpoint the location of a problem in your back, detect any additional spinal problems, and is also used to guide surgical procedures.

There are some risks associated with CT scans, and you should discuss these with your doctor.  As always, don’t be afraid to get a second opinion before you submit to any expensive or risky medical procedures after an accident.
