What is distracted driving?

A:

Distracted driving is what happens when a vehicle driver takes his or her attention off of the road to do something else.  Anything a driver does that does not relate to safely driving the vehicle is considered a distraction.

Distracted drivers cause accidents.  We see it every day here in Houston and across Texas.  Whenever a driver isn’t paying attention, they are at an increased risk of causing a crash.

Some examples of distracted driving include talking on a cell-phone, texting, eating, talking to passengers, reading, using a PDA or other hand-held device, using the radio or a portable music player, and any act of personal grooming.

You can break distracted driving down into three main types – you’ve probably seen all three on our area roads:

  • Visual distractions – anything that causes you to take your eyes off the road
  • Manual distractions – any time you take your hands off the steering wheel
  • Cognitive distractions – any time you take your mind off of driving
