A: It means that the lawyer has (1) demonstrated to the Texas Board of Legal Specialization ("TBLS") that they are substantially involved and have a special competence in personal injury law; (2) obtained positive references from other attorneys and judges; and (3) passed a comprehensive examination.
Only 2% of all lawyers in Texas are Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law.
The Texas bar website has a section called "Why Choose Board Certified"? Read this to find out why the Texas State Bar recommends choosing a lawyer who is Board Certified. Among other things, Board Certification is a "mark of excellence" and a "distinguishing accomplishment."
Here are some of the requirements:
1. Substantial Involvement and Special Competence
The attorney must devote at least 25% of his or her time to personal injury law, and must have tried, as lead counsel, at least ten contested civil cases to verdict.
2. References
The lawyer must obtain positive references from at least four Texas attorneys who are substantially involved in personal injury law, and one judge of record in Texas whom the lawyer has appeared before as an advocate in a personal injury case.
3. Examination
The attorney must pass an extensive written examination.
