You would not be the first person to be hit by a driver who is able to produce an auto insurance card that later turns out to be invalid. What happened? This is a trick used by drivers trying to give the appearance of compliance with the law. They will buy auto insurance, pay the first month’s premium, then cancel the insurance. This way they have the card to show but they aren’t actually covered.
In other situations the person was not able to pay for their insurance or their policy was voided for some reason. While the lapse in coverage may not have been intentional, the result is the same – you are on the hook now for being involved in a wreck with an uninsured motorist.
It’s a dirty trick and the real victim here is the person who is injured by the uninsured motorist. Find out if you have Uninsured Motorist coverage on your own auto insurance policy. If you do, contact your insurance agent – they’ll work with you to get the compensation you need for your property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
If you don’t have UM coverage, or if your insurance company gives you a hard time about paying for the damage done by the uninsured motorist, then you have a challenge ahead. Please talk to a BOARD CERTIFIED Texas car wreck lawyer for advice. There may be ways we can help.
