My doctor says I need a discogram for my herniated disk. What is this?

A: If you are suffering from a herniated disc, your doctor may order one or more diagnostic tests.  These tests can include CT scans, MRI scans or what is called a discogram.

The purpose of a discogram is to confirm which of your spinal cord discs is causing you problems.  This is done prior to any recommended surgery, to ensure that the correct part of your back targeted by the surgeon.

In a discogram, the doctor injects radiographic dye into the disc to see if the pain you feel can be recreated.  If you do feel pain, then the test acts as a confirmation that the doctor has found the disc that is causing your problems.

You should know that this test is controversial, and if you have any doubts about undergoing it you can request a second opinion.
