A: If you were seriously burned on the job, hopefully your employer will try to do what they can to make sure you are taken care of. Burn injuries can be painful and are prone to infection, so quick and skilled medical treatment is important.
However, if your employer or their insurance carrier wants you to see a company doctor or one they recommend, watch out. Company doctors are on your employer’s side – not yours. They may tell you and your employer that your burns are not that bad, that you can return to work soon (or immediately), and that you don’t need any follow up medical treatment.
While this may be true in some cases, it is always in YOUR best interest to get the opinion of an independent doctor – one who does not have ties to your employer or their insurance carrier. An independent doctor can give you an honest assessment of your condition and can recommend appropriate medical care.
The bottom line: always see a doctor of your own choosing when you are hurt on the job.
