I think I need a lawyer for my brain injury case. What questions should I ask?

A: It is a good idea to interview anyone you plan to involve in your injury case, especially if it is a serious injury involving brain damage. You should ask your attorney some pointed questions, and listen carefully to his or her answers.

Not only should you probe the attorney's experience, but you should also be checking to make sure that your personalities are compatible. You may be dealing with this attorney or this firm for a while, so you don't want to hire somebody you find difficult or hard to talk to.

Questions to ask a brain injury lawyer

  • Have you handled cases like mine? Tell me about them.
  • What kind of results did you get?
  • Who will work on my case? Will they work on my case the entire time, or will my case be passed on to somebody else at some point?
  • Who will be my regular point of contact when I have a question? How accessible is this person?
  • How will you keep me up-to-date on my case? Can I call or email you with questions?
  • How do your fees work? How will you get paid to represent me?

Trust your instincts - if you get the feeling that the lawyer isn't being honest with you, go elsewhere. There are plenty of brain injury lawyers out there, so keep looking until you find one you can trust.
