Do children show different symptoms of a traumatic brain injury than adults?

A: The symptoms that children suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) show are similar to adults, but it can be difficult to determine what is wrong because children are not able to communicate as clearly as adults.

  • Children can appear confused or disoriented, and may complain of their head hurting.  You may also see a child:
  • Crying, and unable to be comforted
  • Unusual irritability and frustration
  • Refusing to eat, drink or nurse
  • Unable to focus, take directions, answer questions
  • Sleep habit changes
  • Sad, unhappy, appears depressed

If you suspect that your child may have suffered a traumatic brain injury in a fall or other accident, it is important to get them medical help immediately.  Brain injuries can be very serious, and the success of any treatment often depends on how quickly the child gets help.
