Are my children at higher risk of Texas pedestrian accidents?

A: Children are the single most at-risk group for pedestrian accidents. Over 600 children are killed every year in pedestrian accidents across the U.S., with the numbers even higher in rural areas or communities without sidewalks.
Our Houston child injury attorneys want pedestrians of all ages to stay safe while walking.  Parents and teachers should educate their children about the dangers of traveling on foot, including encouraging everyone to:

  • Cross the road ONLY at crosswalks.  Mid-block crossings or jaywalking are a common cause of pedestrian accidents.  Rather than walk up the street to the designated crosswalk, many children run across roads and dash between cars, barely checking for traffic.
  • Look both ways at ALL crossings.  Children are often taught to “look both ways” before crossing the street, but cars can also pose a danger emerging from driveways and parking lots.  Kids who fail to look both ways before crossing driveways are often victims of back-over accidents, suffering broken bones or head traumas.
  • Find your route.  Just as you would plan your route when taking a long drive, your child should take a consistent route to and from their destination with adequate sidewalks and road crossings.
