For the second time in six weeks, a Metro bus and Metro train collided in downtown Houston. The accident happened on March 15, 2010. The crash happened at the same time as the last accident: at the intersection of Main and St. Joseph Parkway. The bus was westbound on St. Joseph, and the light rail train was northbound on Main.
Nineteen people were injured, nine of whom were sent to area hospitals.
The Houston Police Department, as well as Metro officials, are investigating the crash.
In the last Metro bus - train accident, a video camera on the bus caught the entire incident, which revealed the Metro bus driver was at fault.
There should be a video of this accident as well. The video will likely demonstrate conclusively who was at fault between the train and bus.
The investigators should also investigate the sequencing of the traffic lights at this intersection, as well as the design of the roadway in this area. It may be the case that responsibility lies with individuals or companies beyond only the operators of these vehicles.
It will be interesting to see if the HPD reaches the same conclusions as Metro as to the cause of this crash.
