In Ann Arbor, Michigan, a man was critically injured in an industrial work accident while working at the scene of the Malletts Creek Restoration Project, a developmental plan to help improve the water quality in the Huron river.
The Ann Arbor Police Department and Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department both responded to the scene on Tuesday, shortly after 1pm. They found the worker pinned under an excavator which was stuck in the mud.
The rest of the workers were sent home and traffic was slowed while rescuers freed the victim from the equipment and was taken to University of Michigan Hospital immediately after. The worker’s condition is currently unknown, but reports have indicated severe pelvic injuries as a result.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway as to the cause. Police are trying to determine which agency holds jurisdiction. The equipment belonged to Mead Bros. Excavating, the company was awarded a $2.2 million county contract last summer to do the excavation project.
Only time will tell if the injury was a result of a defective excavator or unsafe work protocols. It is known that the worker was working with the excavator in an obviously muddy area, just fifty feet from a dirt bike path.
