After being involved in a Texas car wreck, one of your first instincts may be to get out of the car to evaluate any damage that may have happened, or to check on the occupants in another vehicle. You may even have already done this at the scene of an accident. A recent accident illustrates why this can be a very bad idea.
A man died recently in north Houston after he crashed his car into a wall on I-45. It wasn’t the impact that killed him; it was another vehicle that struck him after he exited his car.
The crash, which happened just north of Crosstimbers at 4600 North Freeway, happened when a driver lost control of his red Honda Accord. The Honda was then hit by a black Chevrolet Silverado. At some point the driver of the Honda got out of his car, and was then hit by either a gray Buick Park Avenue or a gray Honda Civic.
Police are still investigating the incident as it was not immediately clear what had happened. They are also looking for the driver of the Buick, who fled from the scene of the accident. The other drivers remained at the scene to talk to police, however the Honda’s driver was pronounced dead.
If you find yourself in a disabled vehicle or if you’re involved in a crash – especially along a busy interstate – try to remain in your vehicle until help arrives. Distracted or drunken drivers can crash into you as you walk or stand on the side of the road. If you remain in your car you’ll at least be protected by your vehicle if you are hit.
