When a manufacturer recalls nearly 68,000 products of a certain type, you know something went wrong. Unfortunately, many Americans who have undergone a knee replacement have been treated with a defective knee replacement device. Zimmer Holdings, one of the major manufacturers of knee replacement devices, issued a complete recall in September 2010 of one of its devices due to a devastating defect.
As knee replacement lawyers, we have witnessed many tragedies due to defective products. It is particularly disturbing that companies that manufacture products designed to improve people’s lives actually end up making those lives worse. Zimmer’s knee replacement recall showed us that even the leading manufacturers can make a widespread and costly mistake.
So what went wrong with the Zimmer devices?
The recall was set in motion by a group of orthopedic surgeons who noticed an exceptionally high failure rate of Zimmer knee replacement devices. After examining several cases, the issue with the devices was determined to be a loosening of one component that led to a failure of the device. Every single one of the 114 cases confirmed by the FDA required a revision surgery to fix the knee.
This 2010 recall is separate from the current issues with the Zimmer CR-Flex models. Apparently, there are concerns over even more knee replacement devices, which means there may be many more victims of knee replacement failure. The CR-Flex models are allegedly facing a higher than normal rate of failure. Despite Zimmer’s best efforts to counter the claims that its CR-Flex model is defective, many victims of premature Zimmer knee replacement failure are contacting attorneys to see if they are able to collect compensation.
