Under pressure, Toyota expands recall that goes beyond floor mats

In an update to the largest ever recall ever, Toyota Motor Corporation has announced that not only will it expand the recall of vehicles affected by the unexpected acceleration problem, but it will also go beyond just replacing the floor mats.

These are the Toyota models covered by the current recall:

• Avalon: 2005 through 2010
• Camry: 2007 through 2010
• Lexus ES350: 2007 through 2010
• Lexus IS250 and IS350: 2006 through 2010
• Tacoma: 2005 through 2010
• Tundra: 2007 through 2010
• Prius: 2004 through 2009

If you have one of these vehicles, here is what to expect when you take it to a dealer to be fixed:

• The dealer will reshape the accelerator pedal.  This is intended to prevent the pedal from getting stuck in the floor mat.  In April a replacement pedal will be available so your pedal can be completely replaced rather than just modified.
• If your vehicle has Toyota or Lexus all-weather floor mats, they’ll be replaced with newly designed floor mats.  These new mats supposedly won’t trap the accelerator pedal.
• If you have a Camry, Avalon or Lexus ES350, the dealer will need to reshape the floor beneath the pedal.  This is to increase space between the pedal and the floor.
• If you have a Camry, Avalon, Lexus ES or IS model, the dealer will also have to install a brake override system to cut engine power if the accelerator and brake are engaged at the same time.
