A big part of Toyota's response to its defective cars has been various programs under which they can be "fixed." Toyota says its recalled vehicles can be "fixed," and will no longer have the defect.
So why are people still dealing with Runaway Toyotas even after they have been allegedly "fixed"?
That's what the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wants to know. NHTSA has received some complaints from consumers that their Toyotas were fixed, but then they continued to have problems with unintended acceleration.
This supports the argument that some are making that the floor mats have nothing to do with Toyota's problem. Rather, the problem lies in the electronic components that make up parts of these Toyotas related to the gas and brake pedals.
Toyota denies that the problem is electronics-related -- of course this type of problem would be much, much more expensive to fix, and more difficult to fix. In fact, if the problem is truly electronics, then Toyota would likely have to REPLACE all of the recalled Toyotas, rather than try to fix them.
Stay tuned as the floormat vs. electronics argument plays out. This will certainly be a hard fought battle.
