The U.S. government is fining Toyota $16.4 million for not notifying it of a defect with the acceleration control system in its vehicles. According to the government, Toyota waited over four months before notifying NHTSA of a problem with its cars. Under the regulations, Toyota was supposed to have notified the government within five days of learning of the defect.
NHTSA reviewed documents obtained from Toyota, and concluded the company knew of problems with the gas pedals in its vehicles as early as September 2009. Secretary LaHood of NHTSA stated as follows: "[Toyota] knowingly hid a dangerous defect for months from U.S. officials and did not take action to protect millions of drivers and their families."
Those are strong words. Those must be some bad documents for Toyota.
In fact, all of those documents will come in to the various civil Toyota Recall Lawsuits that have been filed across the country. If Toyota's documents made Secretary LaHood angry, they will likely make juries angry as well.
