Toyota problem with "unintended acceleration": caused by floor mats or electronic throttles?

There are recent reports that Toyota vehicles are experiencing "unintended acceleration."  This has led to many serious and fatal crashes.  Toyota has indicated the problem rests with floor mats in the vehicles, which jam up and cause the accelerator to stick.  Toyota even issued a recall on its vehicles which are experiencing this problem, and the recall is designed to fix the floor mat problem.

However, in a recent crash in which the driver survived, the driver indicated he had removed the floor mats from the vehicle.  Safety experts are now starting to look at the electronic throttle system as a potential cause of the "unintended acceleration" problem.
