Toyota Memo: $100,000,000 for putting the public at risk.

How much money does it take for a company to turn a blind eye to known dangers in its products and put the public at a serious safety risk?  For Toyota, that number is $100,000,000.  That's how much the company saved dodging a sooner recall for problems with the gas pedals, floor mats, and brakes of its vehicles.  This comes straight from a memo authored by a Toyota executive.

No wonder Toyota wanted to hide the Toyota Recall related documents the U.S. government wanted to see.  Incidentally, Toyota didn't agree to fork over this memo -- it came from some other source.

No wonder Toyota's President initially refused to attend tomorrow's safety hearing.  He probably knew what that memo said and didn't feel like getting grilled about it by the legislators.

This memo shows how Toyota manipulated the system and cares more about money than safety.  Instead of dodging safety investigations and trying to save money while putting the public at risk, Toyota should be going out of its way to make sure its vehicles are safe, and if there is any hint of a problem, to fully disclose it and work with authorities on fixing it.

I would not want to be Toyota's President, who goes on the stand tomorrow to testify at a congressional hearing related to the Toyota Recall problems.  No doubt this memo will serve as a cross-examination tool for the legislators during their questioning of the company President -- based on this memo, it could get really ugly.
