The derailment of a train in Galveston County on its way to Houston last week highlighted fears about toxic train cargo. The cars that derailed had been carrying hydrogen fluoride, a chemical that becomes the highly toxic hydrofluoric acid if mixed with water. Fortunately, none of the rail cars carrying the potentially dangerous substance were punctured in the derailment, but it does highlight the danger of transporting such toxic chemicals near homes and businesses.
About 12 railcars spilled off the track in the derailment, 9 turned onto their side and 3 remained upright. A spokeswoman for Union Pacific claimed that only two of the cars contained the potentially deadly chemical hydrogen fluoride, while another was full and contained difluoroethane. Many of the tank cars that came off the tracks slid down an incline into a large drainage ditch that runs along the tracks.
According to news reports of the incident, several homes were evacuated as a safety precaution and another 30 or so households were instructed to remain inside their dwelling until further notice. It is fortunate for these residents that this railroad accident wasn’t more serious. Next time, they might not be so lucky.
