Three Finland Nurses Are In Criminal Court After Accidentally Poisoning Newborn Babies

In Finland, three nurses have begun a criminal trial for accidentally feeding newborn babies and small children Chlorhexidine, a corrosive cleaning product, instead of a sugar solution.

The nurses claim that both Chlorhexidine and the sugar solution are kept in nearly identical bottles and have denied all bodily injury charges.

After being given the doses, the children were rushed to intensive care when the defendants realized their error. Some babies had to be placed on respirators. One was issued an emergency baptism and has yet to fully recover.

The district prosecutor says that the nurses didn’t do it on purpose, but the issue is that the injuries would not have happened if they had been more careful.

On the other end, the nurses are saying the pharmacy which packaged the dangerous chemical is the culprit. Their attorney is asking why the pharmacy isn’t on trial. Both solutions were packaged in identical bottles.

No matter whose fault it is, these babies are still severely injured. Accidents happen every day because the very people that are supposed to be protecting our safety in hospitals are human, just like us. Also, just like us, they need to be held accountable for mistakes that happen on their watch.
