The NFL tries to make a difference for brain injury victims

The National Football League (NFL) Charities – the charitable foundation of the NFL owners – is continuing its work to fund research into brain injury detection and treatment in athletes.  This is important for all accident victims, not just sports injury victims, because the research the NFL Charities fund will ultimately be of use to all traumatic brain injury (TBI) sufferers.

The NFL Charities recently announced that they were awarding over $1.6 million in grants to support sports-related medical research.  The money will be spread between 16 organizations.  The NFL Commissioner stated that the grants were intended to address risk factors for all athletes and make football safer.

In the past, NFL Charities has funded research to study heat stress risks in athletes, brain injury and ACL injury prevention.  This year, the charity is funding the following research projects:

  • Study of new ways to detect brain injury, using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) to detect neuronal injuries.
  • Study the link between football and dementia in older athletes
  • Study the dynamic heart rate behavior of NFL athletes
  • Study MRSA (an antibiotic resistant bacteria) on synthetic turf grass
  • Concussion surveillance in a national sample of middle school football players
  • Study the role of the cervical spine in football concussions
  • Integrated neuroimaging studies for mild football TBIs

Hopefully this research will make a difference in the lives of injured athletes and other brain injury accident victims.
