Texas traumatic brain injury victims look to stem cells for hope

Families of traumatic brain injury (TBI) victims in Texas are always looking for hope in the form of innovative treatments and therapies, to help their loved ones regain brain function. The tragic injury sustained by congressional representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona has brought much of this new research to light.

Children with TBIs are a major concern for doctors and researchers, as they often suffer from serious complications and disability after a bad head injury. Without any treatments or therapies currently available, parents and caregivers are forced to watch their children suffer with little hope of a medical miracle. However, current research right here in Texas holds much promise and hope for these children's futures.

Treating traumatic brain injuries in children with stem cells

A study recently published in the scientific journal Neurosurgery, published for the Congress of Neurological Services, shows promise for the use of a patient's own stem cells to treat injury. In the study, 10 children ranging in age from 5 to 14 years were given their own bone marrow stem cells intravenously.

The study was designed to only investigate the feasibility and safety of the procedure, and did not formally examine how effective it was. However, six months later all the children showed significant improvement and 7 of the 10 kids were left with mild or no disability. If scientists can duplicate these results and prove they work, an untold number of children will benefit.
