The Toyota Motor Corporation has issued another U.S. recall, this one for 2.17 million vehicles. These vehicles may have issues with their accelerator pedal, floor mat design, or both.
The recall was announced as the result of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation into the acceleration pedal entrapment problem that came to a head in 2009. NHTSA reviewed over 400,000 pages of documents from Toyota to determine if the company had recalled enough vehicles to prevent additional entrapment accidents from happening.
Additional Toyota recalls required by NHTSA investigation
NHTSA investigators believe that Toyota had to recall additional vehicles to ensure customer safety. When Toyota agreed to recall 2.17 million more vehicles for the floor mat entrapment issue, NHTSA closed the investigation.
Since 2009 Toyota has recalled a whopping 14 million vehicles worldwide to address various safety issues. There have also been a number of lawsuits against Toyota for crashes related to these safety issues. The most tragic case was when four people were killed in a high-speed crash when the accelerator pedal in a Lexus became stuck under the floor mat, killing all four vehicle occupants.
