Texas High School Student Burned In Chemistry Lab Accident

A Summit High School student suffered serious burns to his arms and face while conducting a science experiment in a lab at school.

The boy, a sophomore in a chemistry class from Mansfield, Texas, received first and second degree chemical burns at school when his experiment took a wrong turn at just before two in the afternoon on Monday, May 23. The school called the police, and emergency responders rushed the male to Parkland Memorial Hospital for treatment. He was released on the same day. It is not clear whether the student was wearing protective gear, such as gloves or eye protection, or whether a teacher was present.

While we don’t often think about the dangers of chemical burns, or while we think of chemical burns as something that only happens to industrial workers, chemical burn accidents can also take place at home or at school. Chemical burns can be extremely painful and lead to long-term consequences such as scarring, breathing issues, and vision problems. Since all chemical burns are different, depending on the cause and severity, never attempt to treat a chemical burn at home.

Have you or a loved one been injured in a chemical burn, or has your child been injured at school? Be sure to speak with a Houston burn injury attorney about your rights and your legal options for compensation.
