Texas budget cuts leave brain injury victims without much hope

Unless you know somebody who has suffered from a traumatic brain injury in Texas, you may not realize that the state offers long-term rehabilitative care to TBI victims who need help.  However, the economic climate and recent budget cuts mean many families are going without the rehabilitation their loved ones need.

If you suffer from a brain injury and need long-term therapy and care, the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services offers help through its Comprehensive Rehabilitative Services program.  This program, however, has a waiting list of over 200 injury victims, many who have run out of options.

Long-term rehabilitation and care can cost $50,000 a year, a high sum for families who are already struggling with job and insurance loss after a tragic accident.  Rehabilitation alone can cost $300 to $450 each day, and without rehabilitation TBI victims’ conditions can deteriorate, leaving them further unable to care for themselves.

Sadly, traumatic brain injuries don’t get the same kind of public attention and appeals for donations and assistance as breast cancer or heart disease, conditions that Americans already know a great deal about.  This means that few people know what it means to suffer from a traumatic brain injury, and how hard it can be to make ends meet after suffering from one.

  • Suffering a traumatic brain injury in Texas can create a nightmare if you lose your job, your insurance, and your savings.  It is important to speak with an experienced TBI lawyer as soon as possible to find out your options and if you can secure meaningful compensation to get you the long-term medical care and rehabilitation you need.
