Whoever prepared Toyota's President, Akio Toyoda, for his testimony at the hearing which occurred yesterday did a terrible job.
Mr. Toyoda stated, in PREPARED REMARKS, that Toyota's efforts to expand resulted in lax safety standards. Mr. Toyoda specifically stated: "I regret that this [expanding] has resulted in the safety issues described in the recalls we face today, and I am deeply sorry for any accidents that Toyota drivers have experienced."
Wow - this is powerful testimony. Toyota's President actually admitted that the safety issues at the heart of the recent Toyota recalls resulted from the company trying to grow too big and too fast. This testimony will likely be used in Toyota Recall Lawsuits across the country, because this is an ADMISSION by the company's president.
The worst part of Mr. Toyoda's testimony is not that he tied the safety issues to the current recalls, but that he used the excuse that Toyota was trying to grow too fast. Juries that hear Toyota Recall Lawsuits will likely not respond well to this argument. This reinforces the perception that many comsumers have about big business: THEY BELIEVE PROFITS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAFETY.
