Subaru has recalled 69,590 of 2011 Outback and Legacy models due to a defect in the sunroof. According to Subaru’s report, the sunroof glass will loosen or totally detach itself from the moving vehicle, making the flying debris on the roadway extremely hazardous for the vehicle and other motorists driving beside. A crash is likely to occur if the detachment happens.
The vehicles that have been affected were produced between August 3, 2010 and July 1, 2011. Consumer Reports has stated that the reason the recall has been issued is because of improper assembly. The sunroof can detach due to the “amount and position of the adhesive between the glass” and the retainer is inadequately applied.
The auto manufacturer began notifying owners of the defect in October and said that Subaru dealers “will inspect the glass adhesion condition and either apply more adhesive or replace the glass for free.”
This is not the first time Subaru recalled the Outback and Legacy. Just last month, Subaru recalled 195,080 Outback and Legacy models manufactured between January 7, 2010 and May 20, 2011 for windshield wiper issues, saying “faulty components inside the wiper motor’s bottom cover could overheat.” If the bottom of the motorcover overheats, the windshield wipers will fail to work, making it difficult to see.
Subaru is expected to notify the owners to these vehicles by the end of this month.
Clearly, the Subaru Outback and Legacy continue to have problems, but recalling them can only do so much. A crash can always result when you least expect it and injuries happen.
