The Wall Street Journal reported that roof testing is the new focus in crash testing performed by the Insurance Institute.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated six mini-cars for their ability to withstand a test designed to simulate the roof-crushing impact of a rollover accident. All of the cars tested are smaller, more fuel-efficient cars that are predicted to be purchased after the "cash for clunkers" program.
The cars tested included the Chevy Aveo, Smart Fortwo, Honda Fit, Mini Cooper, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris.
The car that fared the best on the roof-crush test was the Smart Fortwo, even though the Insurance Institute gave it poor ratings for not doing well in a head-on collision with larger cars. If the car were to flip on its roof, the Insurance Institute is confident that it will protect the passengers since it can withstand 5.4 times the car's weight.
