Rimrock Stages Bus Crash In Montana Leaves 2 Dead and 32 Hospitalized

A Montana bus crash could be under investigation due to negligence.

A Rimrock Stages Bus was traveling on I-90, Near Missoula, Montana, when it slid across a patch of ice and plunged into the median. The bus slammed onto its side and then back upward again at an angle.

Bodies of passengers were flown around the bus during the fatal scene which lasted about a minute. Luggage was thrown, windows were shattered, and rocks shot inside the sliding bus.

When the vehicle came to a halt, passengers were screaming in pain. Some were hollering names which were not answered, according to witnesses.

Two people were found dead when paramedics arrived. All the passengers on board were sent to the hospital for injuries, eight of them being critical.

The American Bus Association commented on the accident saying that conditions were bad and the driver was obviously driving too fast given the circumstances.

The driver has a good safety record and many years of experience driving buses, but investigators say they would be looking at the bus’ “black box” data recorder to determine if it was a case of negligence.

Another factor that came into play was the fact that there were no seat belts on the bus. Several states now require belts on school buses, and according to the American Bus Association, they have supported requiring belts on passenger buses but it’s been hampered by the lack of a federal standard for retrofitting older vehicles. However, many new large buses now come equipped with seat belts.

An Austin man named Doug Taylor was a passenger on the bus. He was diagnosed with five broken ribs, a left lung that is punctured and partially collapsed, and small fractures in the lumbar vertebrae in his back. Taylor is currently in the hospital so doctors can keep an eye on the lung.
