PHI helicopter crash kills 8, injures one

The Houston Chronicle is reporting that  a helicopter operated by PHI, Inc. has crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, killing 8 occupants.  One person survived.

The helicopter was on its way to an offshore oil installation.  Initial reports indicate that the helicopter, a Sikorsky S-762008/07/20 Sikorsky S-76C EC-JET by wicho.C, crashed 7 minutes after takeoff.  The helicopter should have a black box recorder, and the NTSB should be able to pull information off the black box recorded which will provide investigators with more information.

Is PHI, Inc. an unreasonably dangerous company?

This is the second time in less than a year that a helicopter operated by PHI has crashed and killed people.  We wrote about the Huntsville helicopter crash that killed four people last year.  That helicopter was operated by PHI.

Commentary

It is very important that the NTSB and private attorneys fully investigate the PHI helicopter crashes.  Most importantly, the families of those that have been killed need answers.  Also, steps should be immediately taken to determine if PHI should be allowed to continue operating helicopters given two crashes in less than a year involving 12 deaths.
