Paraplegic Dies From Brain Injury, Having No Signs of Injury

Seventy-nine year old paraplegic, Raymond Fields, has died from a catastrophic brain injury. His death has baffled doctors since there appeared to be no physical signs of how it happened.

In 2001, Fields had undergone an aortic valve replacement in 2001 and had since been on the blood-thinning drug warfarin. Fields suffered a hemorrhage of the spinal column in 2005 which left him a paraplegic.

Fields was staying in a sheltered accommodation in Tilehurst in England. In September, an alarm had been raised when the staff didn’t get a response from him during their routine morning calls on the intercom system.

After going to check, the workers found Fields lying in his bed, breathing but unable to answer. After calling an ambulance, he was diagnosed as having suffered a catastrophic brain hemorrhage.

There was no sign of bruising or head trauma, but Fields had suffered a large subdural hematoma. He suffered spasms which could be enough to throw him on the floor. Even if he hit his head on a pillow, it was enough to give him a severe head trauma which caused him to have an acute subdural hematoma.

Could the drug warfarin have been the trouble? We have seen multiple cases against certain blood-thinning drugs which have caused bad effects on the brain.
