Texas is one of the three highest-risk states when it comes to truck accidents. There are more semi crashes in Texas, Florida and California than anywhere else in the U.S.—and the reasons might surprise you.
The Large Truck Crash Causation Study was released in 2007 and compiled from data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The study found that the most common accident-causing factors, in descending order, were:
- Brake problems
- Interruption in the traffic flow (such as congestion)
- Prescription drug use
- Speeding
- Unfamiliarity with roads
- Roadway hazards
- A required stop before crash (such as a crosswalk or red light)
- Over-the-counter drug use
- Inadequate law enforcement
- Fatigue
Not only were there other factors involved in these accidents, such as reckless driving, but most accidents involved a combination of these factors. If a tired trucker is speeding on an unfamiliar road to make a tight deadline, the chances for an accident are substantial.
