Mexico's Interior Minister, Francisco Blake Mora, Is Dead From Helicopter Crash

Yesterday was a sad day in Mexico as the second most powerful official in the country, Francisco Blake Mora, was one of seven passengers killed in a helicopter crash. The helicopter was on its way to a prosecutor’s meeting in the neighboring state of Morelos.  The chopper crashed on a green hillside just south of Mexico City.

According to a preliminary report by Mexico’s Civil Aviation Authority, there was no explosion or mechanical fault reported by the pilot that day. The report stated the pilot chose not to use radars or instruments that would be able to spot dangerous hurdles during the flight, which may have cause the wrongful deaths of eight people.

Mora was the Interior Minister working directly under Mexican President Felipe Calderon. As the front runner in the war of illegal drug cartels in Mexico, Mora dedicated his entire career to fighting against the deathly toll that has taken the lives of many Mexicans in the last five years.

“It was a very cloudy day and an accident looked probable.” President Calderon stated yesterday, “It was probably an accident.” In a televised address, Calderon stated that no explanations can be ruled out, saying that Mora was a “great Mexican.”

Among the powerful around the world that has expressed their grief, our own President Barak Obama called President Calderon saying he is “shocked and saddened” by the death of Mora and the seven others.

Meanwhile, rumors are quickly spreading about the irony that Mora is the third top security official under Calderon’s team to be killed in a government air accident. Though it could be down to a string of bad luck, one analyst is questioning the protocols the government takes when flying high officials. Another debate is up in the air claiming that the drug cartels have taken matters in their own hands.

According to the Communications and Transport Minister Dionisio Perez-Jacome, Mexico has requested help from the U.S National Transportation Safety Board as well as the French office that investigates Aviation Accidents.

The ministry is expected to give a news conference later on Saturday.

As the world mourns and questions the causes of Mora's death, we can also question the safety measures that pilots are taking when flying.
