After a serious brain injury, La Porte accident victims are at risk of suffering memory issues and an inability to focus and sustain attention. TBI victims are especially at risk of experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can strike any accident victim after a traumatic event. PTSD is concerning because it can make recovery and therapy difficult, not to mention turn daily life tasks into a struggle.
Light therapy, according to some researchers, has the potential to help TBI victims. They claim that low-level LED lights have been shown in cell-based studies to improve cellular metabolism and produce beneficial effects.
To show how it works, a Boston area research team used transcranial LED light therapy on two patients suffering from long-time traumatic brain injuries. Both patients showed improvement after treatment with the lights, and continue to use them at home. The results were published in the journal Photomedicine and Laser Surgery.
As the size of the study was so small it isn't clear if cognitive light therapy will work on a wide scale. Researchers believe that further study is needed to see if phototherapy has a place in treating brain injuries and other central nervous system disorders.
