A jury trial has been set by a Superior Court judge regarding the wrongful death suit of 11-year old Alyssa Squirrell, reports the Orange County Register.
Squirrell was killed in a training accident in the Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards program on July 14, 2009, making her the first accidental death in the program since 1964.
During a training exercise about 100 yards out in the ocean, Squirrell was one of 25 Junior Lifeguards. The exercise required them to swim to the boat, climb on board, and when the boat started to drive, they were then to jump back into the water.
Unfortunately, Squirrell and one other girl did not make it back when the boat started to circle. Squirrell was struck by the boat and suffered deep lacerations to her hips and legs.
The young girl's death prompted a wave of support for the family, the city employees involved, and the program that many residents have said is a much-loved part of the community.
The family's lawsuit does not say how much compensation they are seeking. Both the family and the city are expected to meet in April for a required settlement conference.
