The Wall Street Journal reported that roof testing is the new focus in crash testing performed by the Insurance Institute. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated six mini-cars for their ability to withstand a test designed to simulate the roof-crushing impact of a rollover accident. All of the cars tested are smaller, more fuel-efficient cars that are predicted to be purchased after the "cash for clunkers" program. The cars tested included the Chevy Aveo, Smart Fortwo, Honda Fit, Mini Cooper, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris.
At the bottom of the list was the compact Chevy Aveo, which only supported 3.09 times its own weight in the crush test. While this number is caused the Aveo to do the worst amongst its four other competitors, it is still double the current federal standard for safe roofs. Once the federal standard for vehicle weight phases changes to the car needing to support three times its weight in 2012, the Aveo's score of 3.09 will barely meet the standard.
