This week the 400 workers employed at Houston’s Bucyrus International production plant celebrated one million continuous operational hours without a
worker injury or worker accident. The milestone, which was observed with a special luncheon, represents about three years of manufacturing.
The company produces belts, continuous mining machines, longwall conveyor systems, and longwall plow systems – and the environment that the workers are in is filled with potential hazards and opportunities for worker injuries and worker accidents. Workers weld, use heavy machinery, work near high-voltage lines, and are exposed to dangerous gases each day – but no one at Bucyrus has been
seriously injured while working in years.
How does the Houston company prevent
on-the-job accidents? They say that they regular inspections of work areas by both professionals and the workers’ themselves help keep the plant safe, while employees also have in-depth discussions regarding “near-miss” accidents and how similar issues could be avoided in the future.
