Houston High School Students Observe Mock DUI Car Accident

The fact that 60 percent of fatal teen car accidents in Texas involve drunk drivers is not lost on the Houston Police Department, the Spring Branch Independent School District, or the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. The fact that high school kids can be hard to reach is also not lost on the groups. One shocking demonstration has many teens thinking before they drink and drive.

This week on the west side of Houston high school, teens watched as a mock car accident scene unfolded before their eyes - with their classmates as victims. Two demolished cars were set up in a school parking lot while car accident "victims" were scattered around the scene - one thrown hanging out of a shattered windshield and another ejected onto the street. Fake blood and the sound of approaching sirens completed the scene. Soon, emergency vehicles and responders arrived on the scene, arresting a driver, removing others on stretchers, and zipping one teen up in a body bag.

Although this mock car accident may seem like a drastic measure to teach kids about driving while intoxicated, both students and administrators say that sometimes it takes this much drama to get through to kids. They also said that having the event before a social event like Homecoming truly keeps kids safer.
