Houston car crash lawyer warns drivers of faulty Toyota drive shafts

Toyota issued yet another vehicle recall this past week, this time affecting about 8,000 four-wheel-drive 2010 model Toyota Tacoma trucks in North America.  According to Toyota, this voluntary safety recall involves potential production defects in the front drive shaft of some vehicles.

A component used to make the front drive shaft in the affected models may have cracked during the manufacturing process, which could over time lead to the separation of the drive shaft at the joint portion.  If the drive shaft does separate, control of the truck could be compromised, leading to a serious auto accident.

Owners of affected Toyota Tacoma trucks are asked to take their vehicles to their Toyota dealer for a free safety inspection and part replacement.

Other recent Toyota recalls affect a total of eight million vehicles worldwide, and include problems with braking, unintended acceleration (aka sticky throttles), and floor mat accelerator pedal entrapment.

The drive shaft involved in the recall was made by Dana Holding Corporation, which also produced the recently recalled rusty frames of the Toyota Tundra.  According to Dana, the defect involves about 34,000 tube yokes.  These same parts were also sold to Ford Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co, however no recall of Ford or Nissan vehicles has yet been announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was notified on Feb. 11 about this issue by Dana.  The Toledo, Ohio based company says that so far they are not aware of any accidents involving the defective part, and added that the recall involves a limited number of vehicles.
